Compositional variation of talc in metamorphosed serpentinites from Southwest Japan

Compositional variations of talc in peridotites and serpentinites could have significant implications for modeling geochemical cycles involving the upper mantle but been scarcely studied. We analyzed chemical compositions prograde retrograde associated minerals thermally metamorphosed from Southwest Japan. The has Si, Al, Mg, Fe, Na contents. Most Fe indicate mechanical mixing with serpentine chlorite at a submicroscopic scale. Spatial distribution talc–chlorite mixtures suggests their metamorphic origin. Talc–serpentine be formed by decomposition talc–olivine assemblage orthopyroxene conditions higher temperature and/or Si activity than serpentine–brucite mixtures, which are typical products serpentinization olivine. Talc itself, regardless or origin, compositional enrichment as likely result solid solution Na–mica mixing. that most capable reservoir serpentinites.
